History of India is full of great warrior women who devoted their lives to defend their land. The name of Veerbala Tilu Rauteli of Uttarakhand is one of them whose name is a strong symbol of courage and patriotism. Her father, Bhup Singh Rautela, was a reputable military leader, who guarded the territory against outside aggressions.

Tilu had been brought up seeing her father and other courageous men of Garhwal go to war. At a very young age, she was taught to ride a horse, defend herself by a sword, and so on. Her character, confidence, and motivation to defend weak people were apparent even at her childhood.

The Misfit and Tragic Death of Her Child.

Just when Tilu became a teen the condition in Garhwal deteriorated because of frequent invasions by Katyuri terrorists. Violence, land grabbing and high taxation were afflicting the people of the villages. During one of these attacks, the father of Tilu and her two brothers died in the course of protecting their people.

This tragic event took its toll in the life of Tilu. Her mother preferred that she should not get exposed to the perils of war but Tilu believed that she must carry on with the struggle of her father and brothers which had been left unfinished. She made a great commitment at a tender age of 15 years to defend her country and bring peace in the country.

Formation of a Women Army

During the sixteenth century, women did not venture into war. These social beliefs were however tested by Tilu Rauteli. She collected young girl children of her age and trained them on fighting methods. Bela and Devali were two of her best and bravest friends. These were women fighters and they always supported her in any battles.

Tilu had a very popular horse known as Binduli that had an extremely significant role in her victories. The relationship between the warrior and her horse was the legend of the Uttarakhand folklore.

Final Battle and Martyrdom

Nevertheless, the enemy did not stop winning, yet they were still finding the way to strike. In one of her greatest victories she lost her beloved horse Binduli, when she was on the Nayar river. As Tilu hastened to help the horse, she was at a moment attacked by some of the attackers who had managed to get away.

She did not give up even when she was wounded and fought to the last gasp of air but ultimately martyred at the age of about 22 years. Her martyrdom made her a hero in the history of Garhwal.
